GUMBA - UPDATED VERSION

This is an updated version of the earlier one posted

Gumba otherwise known as ‘Wuro Gumba’ is a special kind of dance that takes place during yuletide season i.e Christmas. Musicians (Song Composers) known as ‘Waniye’ would compose new songs. During this period, the new songs would be learnt village by village; hamlet by hamlet, ward by ward etc. Barely a month to the Christmas, there will be drumming and dancing signaling the approaching of the Christmas day: This is not just any dance but a special and unique one.

This is used to welcome the season and the great day but it does not only end there, on Christmas day, communities converge together to entertain themselves with such dances at their place of choice. Some even move from one community or village to the other for this occasion. Not only that, people from towns and cities who traveled home for Christmas savour every moment to catch fun by refreshing themselves with what they miss while in the city. It is also a period of reuniting with old friends and making new ones, family members etc. There is never a dull moment at this time. However lately, civilization has caused this to be fading away to extinction. In fact, there are children who have never seen this before; this is the more reason why I am writing about it to bring back the memories especially to those who have seen this and to let the young ones know we had something like this. Thanks and enjoy your day.
